The first offices of PNC were opened at Liberty Avenue and 12th street. In the year 1853, the bank named was changed to The Pittsburgh Trust Company and 10 years later changed its name once more to become First National Bank of Pittsburgh. It made history when it became the first bank in the United States to apply for a national charter. Fortunately for the company, they received their charter number 48 on August 5, 1863.
What is known today as PNC Financial Corporation came as a result of merging of Pittsburgh National Corporation and Provident National Corporation in 1982. Later, the company purchased over 10 smaller banks which helped the bank to achieve it status today.
